Kochelan is the main city in which the vast majority of roleplaying on the World of Extant MUSH takes place.
Many centuries ago, human explorers discovered that the mountains of the uninhabited land of Ner possessed a vast, rich wealth of precious metals. One of the peaks of what came to be known as the Velfallen Range, was more isolate and stout than most of its rocky brethren. The humans named it Virkhallen and it sat surrounded by forest with a lake at its foot. This lake was connected via river to the ocean and, as such, Virkhallen was considered ideal for a mining operation - one that, although it could never directly compete with the powerful output of the Magi and the resources available in the craggy region of Pel, would still make those involved luxuriously well-off among Varlian standards. With this, the village of Fosreath was set up. However, when the Magi Sovereignty began its imperial expansionism a few decades later, travelling to Ner was made more difficult and Kochelan was eventually largely abandoned.
Following the Glorious Betrayal, a contingent of orcish and elven refugees traveled south into Ner from Lix in search of a place to escape the war and recover. The Elves knew of the discarded mine and structures previously belonging to Fosreath - in their eyes, an easily defensible and remote location - one that the Magi Sovereignty would have little cause to ever investigate. In fact, the residences and tunnels of the Narrows were carved out of pre-existing mining shafts. The orcs and elves worked hard over the course of a century to transform the small and abandoned village into a functioning town, restoring the few structures that were already there, erecting new ones, and clearing the land around Mount Virkhallen for agriculture. The forests, as well, were full of game that were unused to being hunted. Over time, as more refugees were sent to this haven, the town expanded and became to be called 'Kochelan', a portmanteau created by mixing languages and dialects. The meaning of the name roughly translate to 'Home Community'.
When the Jackson Company carried out the Assassination and overtook the states of Varl in their own name, they demanded that Fosreath be recovered from the centuries of disuse. Certainly, humans knew of Kochelan. What they were not aware of, however, was the fact that Kochelan was in fact the very same operation that was Fosreath. Upon discovering this, the merchant families who had ordered the original human expeditions and funded (and benefited from) the mining operation demanded that the land be returned to them. The Jackson Company outright determined this to be a ridiculous sentiment - yet these were powerful human families and the Company's claim to power was definitively circumspect and ill-gotten. Loss of support from these Houses would spell trouble and unrest for their hold on government. The Company refused to allow these Houses to oust the city that had taken up residence in a once derelict human village and denied the Houses' claim to being owed taxes or compensation from the residents of Kochelan. Instead, the group came to an agreement with the leaders of Kochelan and declared that a single representative would be chosen cooperatively by the Houses. This individual would have a permanent, irrefutable, and powerful place in the city's government and their bloodline would inherit their role. As such, the heads of the three Houses with claims to the land were forced to come together and agree on an acceptable candidate. Although the people of Kochelan were not thrilled at the idea of having what essentially boiled down to a monarch and a human one at that, their commitment to this agreement allowed them to open traded with the human nations in Varl. With the powerful shipping industry of Varl, their vessels were well-protected from any interference by the Sovereignty. As Kochelan previously had a particularly lax form of governance, the populace's refusal to accept a single person's word as law led to the creation of the Kochelan Council, an elected board. This congressional body works side-by-side with the Prinxship on legislature. The monarchial position was originally mocked as the 'Royal Human from Varl', but the tried and true leadership of the ruling individual and their lineage has garnered positive public support over generations.
With Kochelan already set up as an active nation in and of itself, it easily became the Alliance's main hub for sources ores and metal to power the war effort against the Magi Sovereignty. This was, it is said, good for business. As the Alliance's campaign went on, Kochelan grew in size - it's location in Ner was generally kept a secret from the Sovereignty in Pel for displaced members of all races, including magi who wished to escape the oppressive tyranny of the government in Pel. By the fall of the Sovereignty, Kochelan had become a hub of multicultural and racial diversity.
